Web 2.0 content provider Digg raises $8.5 mln in new funding

(MarketWatch) With $8.5 million in new financing from previous investors including Greylock Partners and the Omidyar Network, the investment group established by eBay Inc. (EBAY) founder Pierre Omidyar, Digg is looking to hire new developers and consolidate its position among the leading media portals.

Progress Update: Begging for the Beta

Well, it took forever but it seems we’re finally ready to close the alpha. Of course there are going to be TONS of changes coming from the beta, but these will mostly be user interface and design issues rather than deep programming.

The schedule now is to open the private beta on Jan 12. We’re starting with focus group testing in both Holland and Poland now and will run groups during the private beta in SF. This will be a real beta; the system is stable but user feedback is central to our release candidate so we’ve left a lot of room—and expectations—for big, front-end changes.

Ford’s death sets in motion a period of mourning steeped in history

(HoustonChronicle) The modern presidency operates as if by script, with carefully chosen crowds, painstakingly shaped words and backdrops picked for just the right effect. As in life, so, too, in death. The funeral of an ex-president follows rituals soaked in tradition and specified right down to the exact speed of a procession, 20 miles per hour. That doesn’t mean one president’s funeral is like another’s — far from it — and Gerald Ford’s may not have the full-throated grandeur of Ronald Reagan’s in June 2004.

Fans honor an icon of soul

(MercuryNews) The James Brown statue on Broad Street in his hometown was draped in an American flag and a red scarf Tuesday as several dozen people gathered to pay their respects to the late legendary singer. Flowers were left at the base of the statue in tribute to Brown, who died Monday in Atlanta. He was 73. One visitor to the statue, John Arthur Thomas, 73, of Daleville, Ala., said he stopped by because Brown had “done a lot of things from the heart to help people.”
