Standing up to hatred

After so-called cyberbullies caused 13-year-old Ryan Halligan to commit suicide in October 2003, his family set up a Web site to remember him. The online tribute features photos of the Essex Junction teen in happier times: Smiling with his father, John. Hugging his mother, Kelly. Riding his skateboard. Standing near his bike. Then, there is the guestbook – a painful reminder of why www.ryanpatrickhalligan.org is necessary.

Online gaming community pay tributes to Jamie
(The Press) Online gamers from far and wide have paid tribute to the young York barman who died suddenly, aged only 21. Jamie Tidswell, from Acomb, died a few weeks ago after collapsing at home. He had been recovering from a bout of flu. Tributes have been pouring in to the online book of condolences for Jamie set up by The Press - and more have been coming in from across the world from the online gaming community in which he loved to take part.

Memories of a lifetime
On the weekend I was privileged to host the 50th wedding anniversary of my parents. It was an afternoon open house at their home. When I was planning the party for them I asked whom they wanted to attend. I was expecting a long list of at least 100 people, and really was worried about it. When got I it, the guest list totalled 29. My parents decided that they only wanted to invite people that have mattered to them. Those who had a significant impact upon their lives, the ones they love, and people that they are still in contact with regularly.

China remembers Deng Xiaoping
(DailyIndia) More than 33,000 Internet users in China have sent virtual flowers to an online memorial for leader Deng Xiaoping, who died 10 years ago Monday. Deng, a government leader largely credited with a series of reforms in the country that led to the opening of its borders, died at the age of 92 on Feb. 19, 1997, Xinhua, China’s official news agency, reported Monday.

Researchers: Babies form memories early, but also forget
(Chicago Tribune) Adults thinking back rarely can remember anything before preschool, but those bright infant eyes staring back at mommy and daddy really are forming memories. It’s just that babies also forget. In fact, babies forget at a faster rate than adults do, Patricia Bauer of Duke University said Friday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
