Facebook Memorial Keeps Navien’s Spirit Alive at GU
(The Hoya) Last week, the Facebook profile seemed stuck in time, almost as if the world stopped turning, as if life froze in an instant. “I don’t drink. Period. We’ll see if my mind changes after I turn 21,” Matthew Navien’s profile said. The baby-faced rising sophomore would have turned 21 last November. He would have been a junior in the School of Foreign Service this year. On June 19, 2005, Navien died in a fiery car crash on a Massachusetts highway — one caused by a drunk driver who’s now imprisoned. Navien’s Facebook profile was updated for the last time just a few days before his death.

War and the Web
(Broadcasting & Cable) Last week, to mark the fourth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the filmmaker Robert Greenwald and his Brave New Foundation launched an online memorial to the more than 3,200 U.S. service members who have died since the war began in March 2003. The Iraq Veterans Memorial, at iraqmemorial.org, is a montage of one-minute video tributes to the fallen, delivered by family, friends and comrades-in-arms. The memorial is perhaps the most poignant example of the extent to which the war has played out on the Internet, particularly via online video. If Vietnam was the first “television war,” in which nightly newscasts flooded American living rooms with images of combat, Iraq is the first Web war, with bloggers, “citizen journalists” and often the troops themselves uploading raw feed from the battlefield.

Networking…in real life
It’s great to see the meshing of virtual social networking with real world socializing. The Kitchener Record covered a great story this weekend about Brent Bauman, a man who was tired of being alone. He searched the internet and started using a service called Meetup.com

Web site serves Jewish mourners
(JTA News) A new Web site offers a venue for mourners to share memories and information about their lost loved ones. Nichum.com will create an online memorial through its feature “Stories of Life,” which allows users to enter stories and memories about the departed. The site also allows for the sharing of funeral and shiva details and the posting of photos.
