MySpace as a war memorial

(The Olympian) Pfc. Anthony J. Sausto liked listening to the band Green Day and watching movies starring Adam Sandler. The Fort Lewis soldier wanted to have children someday. Sausto was killed May 10 by small-arms fire in Baghdad, but many personal details and his photograph live on at his MySpace.com profile.

Desperate for Income, Cemeteries Are Seeking Breathing Clientele

Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, N.Y., held a daffodil brunch in one of its chapels recently as a way to raise money for reconstruction and upkeep.

(The New York Times) Something that would have been thought surreal not too long ago is happening. With the popularity of creamation on the rise, cash strapped cemeteries are seeking alternative revenue streams. Many have begun ‘events’ like this one in Troy, New York, where dinner is served to weekend tourists. Others have begun bird watching lectures, cconcerts and of course, Hallowe’en Parties.

Teens cope with grief online

The shooting death of 15-year-old Jordan Manners in a Toronto high school is tragic, but we can't take it as evidence that our schools are dangerous places that are getting worse, Dan Gardner writes. Peter J. Thompson, CanWest News Service

(Toronto Star) While school-sanctioned grief counsellors were brought into C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute to help students cope with Wednesday’s tragedy, many opted instead to express their emotions through Facebook and text messaging, avenues not controlled by parents or teachers. Within a few hours of the shooting of Grade 9 student Jordan Manners, an outpouring of shock, anger and sadness were posted on the Facebook social networking website. Last night’s candlelight vigil was organized quickly and entirely online by students and friends yesterday morning.

Book Club

Martha's book club

In our village there are a few book clubs. I like to think of them as a continuum of clubs. Some tending to the cerebral - meeting at the library mid week for two hours with scripted questions, others to the not so cerebral. I belong to the latter kind.
